What Construction and Restaurants Have in Common

In his famous Kitchen Confidential, the postmodern cult classic, Anthony Bourdain has a dig at restaurants that serve brunch on the weekends. He says it’s an easy way to get rid of scraps and attach a hefty price tag to it. Clever business maybe, but potentially not so great for the customer.
What Construction and Restaurants Have in Common

But, the real red flags he says, are restaurants that go the whole hog.

You know, extensive menus.

Restaurants that serve a global genre-bending extravaganza. Restaurants that are closed for lunch, then open for lunch, then only open Weds-Sat. Then Thurs-Sat. This shows that they’re in the proverbial… And the owner is trying to scramble. When you scramble you do too much… And it becomes a confusing mess. Unless you’re talking about eggs of course.

Today’s video is about that old phrase “mining your own patch of diamonds”– Unlocking Massive Growth for Your Construction Business.

I’ve grown my business over the years and I’ve been successful because I focus my attention on doing what I do.

And in my business, I also see businesses that are struggling and businesses that are successful.

Some trends tend to emerge.

The best construction companies DO ONE THING.

To be successful you should focus on doing ONE THING REALLY WELL.

Do ONE THING better than anybody else.

Time and time again the companies that focus on one thing do the best.

Businesses that are less successful try to do too many things. It’s like the restaurant analogy.

It’s one thing having a side hustle, but when you’re a Jack of all Trades you really are a Master of NONE.

Another thing I’ve noticed is a lot of the most successful businesses are family-run or private.

They’ve been going for a long period of time.

DO ONE THING

KEEP IT IN THE FAMILY

AND DO IT FOR A LONG TIME.

Having a sense of legacy and continuation is important.

Considering every aspect of RISK is vital.

Making decisions based on the long-term future not just on “the now”.

Having a sense of future and legacy also means you are PASSIONATE about your business. You see it as an extension of yourself as opposed to “just a job”.
