When it comes to onsite relationships, you have to realise that it’s about how you can help other people to help you.
BECAUSE It’s not just about doing a good job.
I’ve got a story about how I lost my cool… and I almost NEVER lose my cool.
From this story, I’ll also give you some great tips on how to create great relationships with clients and contractors.
Once upon a time, I was in a portacabin in the middle of the desert.
This place is called Umm Qasr if you’d like to check it out on a map.
I WENT NUTS AT THIS SUBCONTRACTOR… I’D LITERALLY HAD ENOUGH AND TOLD HIM WHERE TO GET OFF!
How did I get to that point?
Essentially this guy was a subcontractor for the company I was working for.
They would do a lot of excavation
They were doing a fine job
But he kept coming into my office every day begging and pleading to be paid.
And then giving me rubbish paperwork and documentation.
I couldn’t make head nor tail of the paperwork.
The quality of his paperwork was some of the worst I’ve ever seen.
I pleaded with him to structure his payment applications properly and according to the rates in the contract.
I kept asking him to show me the work he’d done…
To give the timesheets….
He was getting frustrated with me.
I couldn’t attach my signature to his paperwork and he thought I was being obstructive.
WHAT I KEPT TELLING HIM…
It’s not how good the job that you do
This is just your ticket to entry.
It’s expected that you do a good job.
What matters is how good you make people look who deal with the paperwork
You need to develop a relationship
Go through goals, i.e. my goal is to help you as much as possible.
Once you’ve done this you can talk about what you need each other to do so that you can manage expectations and work together.
