For example, I’m going to throw in a sports story…
A couple of years ago Manchester United were playing Newcastle United. For those of you who aren’t familiar with these teams, we’re talking soccer/football.
Newcastle’s philosophy was to play with a really flamboyant and exciting style. The manager believed that all they needed to do was score more goals than the other team.
Manchester United’s philosophy was not to lose. Sir Alex Ferguson, the coach, believed in doing anything you can not to lose the game.
This philosophy meant that Manchester United won the season.
So even though the amazing and exciting football was great to watch… the team that won was the one that focused on winning.
So back to the question… What are you optimising for?
Manchester United optimised to win… and Alex Ferguson promoted doing EVERYTHING not to lose.

- Limit the downside
- Don’t ignore what’s in the contract
